What Does It Mean that Tweens Thought I Worked at Bluemercury?

It was Easter 2019. This is what I wore to church.

With “He is Risen” still ringing in my head, Ashley and I took a nice neighborhood stroll. It was the type of day Peeps appreciate. Not too hot, sun shining. The grass looked great.

We passed a Bluemercury.

Ashley, apparently missing the part of the Easter sermon that said inner beauty is actually the easter egg we should be hunting for, popped inside for some Oribe Dry Texturing Spray and SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic.

I entered the store as well. What are the benefits of body butter? After admiring the latest offerings from Trish McEvoy and Bobbi Brown, I felt an impatient tap on my blazer’s unstructured shoulder. Jesus?

Excuse me sir? Do you work here?

The tweens staring back at me with their cherubic midriffs showing wanted my beauty assistance.

Jesus Christ.

All I could muster was:

I WISH.

Not a great response. The tweens didn’t know what to do with it either.

What did it mean for me?

Virtue was one of the products I saw that day.

It rebuilds damaged hair. That was my first step. Rebuild. I once thought I was going to play in the NBA. I’d settle for making it to Vice President of anything now. These girls thought I managed(?) the Bluemercury.

On the rest of the walk home that Easter Sunday, I thought about three key lessons I could take from this experience:

  1. La Mer eye concentrate helps skin bounce back. I needed to concentrate on having better comebacks ready for at least 10 imaginary scenarios. Pastors and priests always respond with Bible verses. They might be onto something. I could have said to those tweens: “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” 1 Peter 3:3-4

2. Similar to dermalogica’s multivitamin power firm, this scenario firmed up the thought that if you dress like a boss, people may think you’re the boss (?).

3. lune + aster has numerous products that help smooth the skin. Yes, AND. I needed to be smoother. Why didn’t I just suggest a product to the teens? “Well, you know, at your age, stress is going to cause the Rocky Mountains to sprout from your forehead and you’re probably going to be sneaking into music festivals, so this lune + aster cc cream might be nice. It evens skin tone, protects from harmful UV rays common at Coachella and creates a dewy glow.”

Most people go to Bluemercury looking for something to help them nourish and replenish. To help them get that dewy glow. That’s what I got as well.

Every time I walk past a Bluemercury now, which is every day on my way to work, I peel off another layer of my mask and reveal a more radiant complexion. You could say it’s part of my morning beauty routine.

One product really stuck with me from that experience, especially today. It’s called RÉVIVE.

The definition of revive is to restore to life or consciousness.

Which sounds a lot like a story that’s pretty important on Easter.

He is risen. He is risen, indeed.
